Authors Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten regularly provide business book recommendations through their company 800-CEO-READ. In their new book, The 100 Best Business Books of All Time, they provide summaries of important business titles and describe how each book can help readers. The book summaries are arranged into subject categories such as Leadership, Strategy, Innovation and Creativity, Management, Sales and Marketing, and Entrepreneurship.
They include several classics such at Good to Great and How to Win Friends and Influence People, along with more recent titles such as Made to Stick. At the end of each review, the authors suggest other related titles in the book to look at and books of interest that are not included in the 100 Best list. There are sidebars scattered throughout that provide information outside of the reviews, such as a list of interesting conferences to attend and a series of famous Peter Drucker quotes.
Among the new books that provide advice for life improvement is Creating Your Best Life: The Ultimate Life List Guide by psychologist and life coach Caroline Miller and professor and psychologist Dr. Michael B. Frisch. The book includes several worksheets and exercises to help readers set goals that will contribute to happiness and success. The authors also provide advice on how to enhance abilities necessary to achieve success and how to become more resilient while also appreciating accomplishments.
Another recent book offering suggestions for achieving a more productive, successful life is The Power of Less by Leo Babauta. He advises readers to cut back on clutter and unnecessary work to increase productivity. His tips include: focus on three essential projects, limit yourself to one large goal at a time, and keep emails to just five sentences. Babauta advocates a simplified life to increase productivity and be more effective.
Author T.C. Boyle focuses his new novel, The Women, on legendary American architect and egomaniac Frank Lloyd Wright. During his life, Wright achieved fame for his buildings, but he also received much attention for his extramarital affairs. This fictionalized account of Wright’s life is told through the experiences of the four women who loved him. The story is narrated by fictional character Tadashi Sato, a Japanese architectural student who apprenticed with Wright at his Wisconsin estate Taliesin.
The book moves backwards in time and begins with Wright’s third wife, Olgivanna Milanoff, an exotic beauty and dancer from Montenegro. His second wife, the Southern belle Maude Miriam Noel, is passionate, addicted to morphine, and features prominently in the novel. Feminist Mamah Borthwick Cheney, the subject of Nancy Horan’s popular novel Loving Frank, is the mistress and intellectual companion for whom Wright leaves his first wife Kitty Tobin. Boyle has created an entertaining novel of Wright’s tumultuous life and engaging portraits of the women who both loved and endured him.
